PROUD | Correlation of SUD, Domestic Violence, Intimate-Partner Violence, and Sexual Abuse – 7/21/26

The Connecticut Hospital Association (CHA) and the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) are hosting a multipart education series, PROUD: Strengthening Care for Parents in Recovery. Parents Recovering from Opioid and Other Use Disorders (PROUD) is a SAMHSA-funded program of DMHAS.

Violence, including domestic violence, intimate-partner violence, and sexual assault, is a significant and often underrecognized contributor to poor maternal health outcomes, including during the postpartum period. These experiences can also intersect with substance use disorder in complex ways, influencing safety, recovery, trust in healthcare systems, and a patient’s ability to engage in care.

This PROUD webinar will explore the relationship between substance use disorder, domestic violence, intimate-partner violence, sexual abuse, and trauma, with a focus on pregnant and postpartum individuals. Panelists will share insights from their work supporting survivors, individuals in recovery, and communities that may experience barriers to traditional systems of care.

Healthcare providers will gain a better understanding of how violence and trauma can affect substance use, recovery, and care-seeking behavior. Panelists will also offer practical, trauma-informed strategies for recognizing risk, reducing stigma, responding in a nonjudgmental manner, and connecting patients to supportive resources that promote safety, healing, and improved outcomes.
