CHA Releases Reports Detailing Hospitals’ Contributions to Connecticut’s Economy and Communities

The Connecticut Hospital Association (CHA) has released three annual reports detailing valuable data and information demonstrating the impact of hospitals’ and health systems’ contributions to Connecticut’s economy and communities.

  • The 2025 Connecticut Hospitals Today report examines the key challenges facing Connecticut’s hospitals and health systems, highlights the contributions of hospitals to Connecticut’s quality of life and economy, and summarizes the complex issue of hospital finance
  • The 2025 Community Benefit Report contains tangible examples of hospitals’ collaboration with community-based partners to address social drivers of health, invest in preventive care, enhance healthcare access and affordability, and advance health equity
  • The 2025 Economic Impact Report provides statewide data on jobs, healthcare spending, and capital improvements and shows how hospitals’ investments stimulate additional economic activity

Among the reports’ findings, in one year, Connecticut hospitals:

  • Generated a total economic impact of $41.1 billion
  • Contributed $3.5 billion in community investments
  • Supported 259,877 jobs, with a total payroll of $21.3 billion
  • Provided care to 345,700 admitted patients, amounting to 97 million days of inpatient care
  • Treated more than 5 million patients in emergency departments
  • Provided 5 million episodes of outpatient services
  • Invested $302.5 million in health professions education
  • Provided $270.9 million in uncompensated care to support patients who cannot pay
  • Provided $1.43 billion in unpaid hospital care to Medicaid beneficiaries and $1.38 billion in unpaid hospital care to Medicare beneficiaries

CHA releases these annual snapshot reports to help inform healthcare-related policy, including throughout the 2025 Legislative Session.  Key advocacy priorities are summarized in Connecticut Hospitals Create Real Change by Caring for Connecticut, a printable palm card.

All reports are available to view and download on the CHA website’s Publications and Reports webpage.  All current and future advocacy materials are available to view and download on the CHA website’s Advocacy webpage.  CHA will provide additional advocacy materials throughout the session on key legislative issues that arise.

Throughout the 2025 Legislative Session, CHA will continue to advocate for Medicaid reimbursement rates that cover the cost of care, improvements to the state’s Certificate of Need (CON) process, policies that address unfair health insurance practices like misuse of prior authorization, collaborative efforts to grow the healthcare workforce and prevent workplace violence, and investments to expand behavioral health services.  CHA is also urging lawmakers to help protect the 340B Drug Pricing Program to preserve programs that support underserved populations and to reimagine Medicaid to focus on upstream, root-cause drivers of health and community-based interventions.

The role of hospitals goes beyond treating individuals when they are sick to addressing the structural factors that shape an individual’s health.  Even as they grapple with significant financial pressures, hospitals’ doors are always open, and caregivers are always ready to heal.
