Patient and family engagement is an essential element in the new CMS Patient Safety Structural Measure (PSSM). It is directly linked to the HRO principles of deference to expertise and organizational resilience. Patients and their families are often the best source of information regarding how to provide optimal care experience, and can provide an added layer of resilience to ensure care is provided safely and reliably. Engaging patients in co-designing care and participation in all aspects of event learning enriches safety culture and accelerates the improvement efforts for healthcare organizations. Adding the voice of the patient to an organization’s safety management system strengthens both safety and quality, and the overall
experience of the patients, their families, and even the workforce.
The fourth session in this five-part senior leader series is virtual and presented by Press Ganey’s Sue Teman and Steve Kreiser.
