Community Benefit Report
Hospitals contribute to community well-being in many ways: by providing free and discounted care, subsidizing essential health services, developing new therapies through groundbreaking research trials, establishing low- and no-cost health and wellness education opportunities, and supporting community health improvement activities.
In 2022, the value of these types of community contributions was approximately $3.4 billion statewide.
Connecticut hospitals contributed the following in community benefits in Fiscal Year 2022:
- $4.5 million in subsidized health services to provide care needed by the community
- $46.1 million in community health improvement services and operations
- $267 million in health professionals education
- $7.3 million in community building to create stronger, healthier communities
- $15.7 million in research and other programs to advance healthcare for patients and the community
- $270.1 million in uncompensated care: Charity care/bad debt to provide services for those who cannot pay
- $37.8 million in donations to help support community organizations
- $1.23 billion in unpaid hospital care provided to Medicaid beneficiaries
- $1.55 billion in unpaid hospital care provided to Medicare beneficiaries
