Employers urged to take action on Haitian workers facing end of immigration protections

Haitians in Connecticut on Temporary Protected Status (TPS) have just a few more days before they are threatened with deportation.

The Supreme Court ruled last month that the Trump administration could remove TPS protections from Haitian and Syrian immigrants. Haitians’ status was due to have lapsed today, but a federal court ruling has just extended the protections until Monday.

New Haven’s Integrated Refugee and Immigrant Services estimates that between 4,000 and 5,000 people in Connecticut could be affected.

Immigration attorney Dana Bucin of Harris Beach Murtha says she has been receiving a high volume of calls since the Supreme Court decision.

“People from those communities or the employers of people from those communities are reaching out to me and they’re asking me how to keep these people here,” she said.

Haitian immigrants are integral in many healthcare settings. National estimates for elder care services show as many as 30% of caregivers may be on TPS status.

Bucin said that she can explore whether TPS holders may be eligible for asylum, a work visa, or can be sponsored for a green card by a family member, and she’s urging employers to be proactive.

“In the appropriate cases where there’s scarcity of American labor that justifies a green card, I believe that there should be a moral imperative for employers to consider it,” she said.

Bucin also warns that many immigrants are falling prey to scams from people posing as immigration attorneys who will charge a fee but take no action.

She points out that, unlike undocumented immigrants, TPS holders are registered with the federal government and can easily be traced for deportation.
