U.S. Senate Rejects House-Passed Stopgap Funding Package

On Friday, September 19, the U.S. Senate blocked legislation to fund the government through November 21, hours after Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives passed the stopgap bill.  Senate Democrats offered a competing short-term spending package that included several priority healthcare provisions.  That proposal also failed to advance, and Congress is on recess until Monday, September 29, one day before the September 30 deadline to avoid a government shutdown.  The major sticking point is a debate over whether to address expiring healthcare subsidies.
