Yale New Haven Health (YNHHS) said Tuesday it will acquire a North Haven-based ambulance service.
The health system announced it has entered into an agreement to acquire Nelson Ambulance Service, based at 208 Quinnipiac Ave. in North Haven, and its affiliates, including Access Ambulance.
Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Approval by state regulators is required for the deal, which YNHHS said it expects to close in the first half of 2025.
YNHHS added that while it awaits approval, it will work to ensure a smooth integration of the Nelson Ambulance operations and its team — including making offers of employment to “substantially all Nelson employees in good standing.”
The acquisition will strengthen the health system’s transport capabilities, it said, “to create a more integrated experience for patients across the Yale New Haven Health continuum of care.”
“Nelson Ambulance is a critical part of the medical transport business across our state,” said Christopher O’Connor, CEO of YNHHS. “This acquisition will allow for more direct supervision of patient transport, allowing for better coordination and more efficient integration with medical staff resulting in better, safer care from arrival to discharge.”
YNHHS said it has worked closely with Nelson for many years, and that the acquisition builds upon existing communication tools, quality standards and safety methods, while also presenting an opportunity to develop and grow Yale New Haven Health’s capabilities within emergency medical services.
