Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital on Tuesday opened a new Children’s Crisis Intervention Center.

The behavioral health treatment space is located within the Children’s Hospital’s Emergency Department at 1 Park St. in New Haven and will begin treating patients in August.

The center will serve children up to age 15 who are experiencing a behavioral health crisis. It aims to provide a calm, therapeutic environment where patients can be quickly evaluated, stabilized and connected to services.

The center provides 24/7 care from a team of physicians, nurses, social workers and milieu counselors trained in pediatric behavioral health. A milieu counselor specializes in creating a therapeutic environment for those with a mental health condition.

Dr. Kate Heilpern, president of Yale New Haven Hospital, said the new center addresses a growing need for pediatric behavioral health services.
