CT hospital officials warn of spike in electric scooter crashes involving juveniles

Hospital officials in Connecticut are warning parents about a recent spike in crashes involving electric scooters.

The emergency department at the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center treated a record number of children and teens who were injured in scooter crashes this past weekend, according to a spokesperson for CCMC.

In light of more children using scooters during the summer months, the hospital is encouraging parents and guardians to understand the risks involved in allowing children to use scooters and to take safety precautions.

A hospital spokesperson urged parents to discuss with their children the need to share the road responsibly and to ensure proper helmets are used.

The spike comes during what transportation officials describe as the “100 deadly days of summer.” The time period between Memorial Day and Labor Day tends to be busier on the roads and can lead to a surge in serious or deadly crashes.

So far this year, the state has seen a drop in fatal traffic crashes compared to the same time period in 2025, according to the University of Connecticut Crash Repository. Motorcycle crashes, however, have been on the rise.

The repository data — which was last updated on July 19 — shows that 32 fatalities involving motorcycles have occurred in Connecticut. During the same time last year, 22 such fatalities had been reported.
