Being an independent hospital ‘is only going to get harder’

Rural hospitals have long treated independence as a virtue in itself — a signal of community identity, local control and mission fidelity. Kyle Kramer, chief executive officer of Day Kimball Health in Putnam, Conn., has spent six years leading a formally designated rural hospital that holds all of those values. But he also believes independence has a ceiling.
