CT college set to launch new nursing degree

Mitchell College in New London said it is launching a new nursing bachelor’s degree program next fall in order to address the industry’s care-provider shortage.

A new simulation lab on campus will assist students in this program practice a variety of healthcare techniques and procedures, the school said.

The program runs for six semesters, offering clinical placement for students, and is designed to expose them to a variety of healthcare settings and patient populations, the college said.

To launch the program, Mitchell College said it’s partnering with Yale New Haven Health/Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, Colchester and Waterford public schools, Shoreline Therapy Center, and the state Department of Correction.

Graduates of the program will sit for the National Council Licensure Examination-RN to become a registered nurse.

The nursing program received funding from the Edward and Mary Lord Foundation and the CT Health Horizons.

Schools across Connecticut and the nation have been increasing nursing programs in recent years.

For example, the Arizona College of Nursing recently opened a new satellite campus in East Hartford.

UConn is building a new $100 million nursing school to accommodate growing enrollment.

Even still, the number of qualified nursing applicants has increased exponentially in recent years, resulting in many programs having wait lists, Mitchell College said.

“With serious nursing shortages across the country, this field offers a wide range of employment options and the ability to find openings in almost every corner of the country,” Mitchell College said. “This pent-up workforce demand means you get a high return on your investment with finding well-paying employment.”

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor, the annual median salary for nurses in Connecticut is $77,600 and RNs earn an annual median salary of $86,000.

There will be 193,100 projected job openings in nursing from 2022-32.
