Encompass Health opens first rehab hospital in CT, eyes another location

Encompass Health, the nation’s largest owner and operator of inpatient rehabilitation hospitals, has opened its first facility in Connecticut with the launch of a 40-bed hospital in Danbury on Friday.

The new Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Danbury is located at 50 Reserve Road and spans 50,500 square feet. It is intended to help patients recovering from strokes, brain and spinal cord injuries, amputations and complex orthopedic conditions regain mobility and independence.

Patients receive at least three hours of physical, occupational or speech therapy five days a week, along with 24-hour nursing care and regular physician visits. Treatment is guided by an interdisciplinary team of doctors, nurses and therapists who tailor care plans to individual recovery goals.

“This hospital will fulfill an important need in the community,” said Mat Gooch, president of Encompass Health’s Northeast region, “enabling patients in the Greater Danbury area to recover from serious illnesses and injuries close to their loved ones.”

The facility includes 40 private patient rooms; a therapy gym with advanced rehabilitation technology; an “activities of daily living suite” that simulates home environments; and a landscaped therapy courtyard. Other amenities include an in-house dialysis suite, pharmacy, dining room and dayroom areas.

The Danbury hospital is Encompass Health’s 170th nationwide. The Birmingham, Alabama-based company operates facilities across the country but until now had no presence in Connecticut.

Encompass Health is already seeking to add a second rehab hospital in the state. The company filed a certificate of need (CON) application on July 25 with the state Office of Health Strategy seeking approval to build a $69.5 million, 50-bed, for-profit rehab facility on property at 596, 612 & 616 East Main St. in Branford.
