Improving Maternal Health: Connecticut Hospitals Launch Postpartum Bracelet Initiative This Fall

The Connecticut Urgent Maternal Warning Signs Bracelet Initiative — a state-funded effort led by the Connecticut Perinatal Quality Collaborative (CPQC) and supported by the Connecticut Hospital Association (CHA) — aims to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality by improving clinical awareness of potential postpartum complications and conditions.

Starting this fall, birthing hospitals across the state are providing postpartum patients with an orange bracelet and informational handout before leaving the hospital.  The bracelet signals to healthcare professionals and emergency personnel that the wearer is newly postpartum, enhancing timely recognition of and response to symptoms of potentially serious postpartum complications and conditions, known as “urgent maternal warning signs.”  This includes eclampsia, blood clots, sepsis, cardiomyopathy, and perinatal depression.  The initiative also educates healthcare providers and first responders on standardized lifesaving protocols, ensuring postpartum patients seeking emergency services are identified and triaged appropriately.

Bracelet Initiative Virtual Trainings

In early September, CHA is hosting three virtual training sessions designed to educate healthcare providers on the statewide implementation of the Bracelet Initiative.  Each webinar is specifically tailored to inform the following audiences: one for emergency medical services (EMS) personnel and emergency department (ED) staff, one for hospital staff and healthcare providers, and one for healthcare providers at community-based organizations.

Sessions will be recorded and available on the CHA website.  Continuing education credits will be offered for one year after posting.  After one year, the sessions will still be accessible, but continuing education credits will no longer be offered.

  1. Training for EMS Personnel and ED Providers: Monday, September 8, 10:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m.
  2. Training for Hospital Staff and Healthcare Providers: Tuesday, September 9, 1:00 p.m.-2:30 p.m.
  3. Training for Community-Based Organization Healthcare Providers and Staff: Monday, September 15, 10:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m.

Connecticut hospitals and health systems are committed to addressing maternal health across the state, and working collaboratively with lawmakers, community partners, providers, and patients to ensure those giving birth are heard and are decision makers in their care.  The Bracelet Initiative advances the goals of CHA’s statewide strategy to improve maternal health through collective efforts and advocacy.
