Hospital leaders were at the state Capitol this week meeting with Democratic and Republican lawmakers, including legislative and budget leaders, to advocate for advancing a new path forward for Connecticut’s hospital tax.
Discussions centered on the need for a more effective and sustainable approach to the state’s hospital tax that maximizes federal revenue and directs those funds back into patient care. Leaders emphasized opposition to the governor’s hospital tax proposal released earlier this year and discussed how the state can better structure and reinvest hospital tax dollars to begin to stabilize the healthcare delivery system, particularly as hospitals continue to face rising costs, workforce challenges, and significant underpayment from government payers – all issues recently detailed in a Hartford Courant report: “CT hospitals are struggling under financial strain. ‘We cannot continue to do more with less.’”
A strengthened hospital tax model would help protect access to care, support caregivers, and ensure communities across Connecticut can continue to rely on high-quality services close to home.
Hospital leaders will continue working with policymakers in the weeks ahead to advance solutions that prioritize patients and strengthen and sustain care delivery.
