The Food Pantry at Windham Hospital, opened in September of 2024, provides a bag of non-perishable, healthy food that will last an individual about 3 days and is available to any patients transitioning home from the hospital as well as patients from oncology, wound care, cardiac rehab, the Women’s Center and Windham Center for Mental Health. |

The Charlotte Hungerford Hospital Food4Health Clinic is a Food is Medicine program that provides medically tailored groceries to food insecure patients with certain medical conditions. Specifically, the F4H Clinic provides prescriptions for visits to the clinic for patients to get no-cost nutritious foods, fruits and vegetables along with nutrition education and counseling. A rooftop garden at the hospital provides the freshest produce to Food4Health patients. |

These innovative health clinics will be adaptable, flexible, and open to feedback to ensure access to needed services and programs. Mobile “CareVans” visit and operate daytime health clinics at specifically chosen locations every week. They offer a variety of health services including screenings, mental health counseling, medical referrals, education and support. The Pfizer 2023-2024 COVID-19 vaccine and several other non COVID immunizations are also available. |

The Greater Middletown Health Enhancement Community Coalition Nutritious Foods Subcommittee was formed to fulfill a community need for more equitable and sustainable access to fresh, nutritious foods. It recognizes that food insecurity is an issue in our community; the benefits of nutritious foods to address chronic disease prevention and management; the potential to leverage multiple community assets to create sustainable, equitable access to healthy food; and that food (growing, preparing, eating) is a powerful vehicle for community connection and well-being. Accomplishments include extensive starter plant distribution during the growing season; a focus on hydroponic growing; and dissemination of tailored education information on healthy eating and nutritious foods. |
