Polls for key municipal races across the state closed on Tuesday, November 4. The Office of the Secretary of the State continues to tally the unofficial vote totals on its website.
New Britain State Representative Elected Mayor
State Representative Robert “Bobby” Sanchez (D-New Britain) was elected mayor of New Britain. Mayor-elect Sanchez will follow six-term Republican Mayor Erin Stewart, who did not seek reelection and is exploring a run for her party’s gubernatorial nomination.
In unofficial results, Mayor-elect Sanchez defeated Republican challenger Sharon Beloin-Saavedra. Mayor-elect Sanchez was first elected to the Connecticut House of Representatives to represent the 25th House District in 2010 and currently serves on the Education; Finance, Revenue and Bonding; Commerce; and Housing Committees.
The 25th House District includes a portion of New Britain.
Mayor-elect Sanchez is expected to resign from his seat in the General Assembly. At that point, under state law, the governor is required to issue a writ of special election within ten days of a vacancy in the General Assembly, and a special election must be held exactly 46 days after the date the writ was issued.
Municipal election results are considered unofficial until certified by Secretary of the State Stephanie Thomas.
