Safety II is an approach to safety management that focuses on understanding and enhancing what goes right in complex systems, rather than solely preventing and correcting what goes wrong. In addition to traditional safety models (Safety I), which importantly prioritize avoiding errors and mitigating failures, Safety II emphasizes finding and spreading successful operations and resilience. It recognizes that human variability and adaptability are key to handling unexpected situations, allowing people to work safely despite challenges. By analyzing everyday
performance, Safety II seeks to build systems that are robust, flexible, and able to function well under varying conditions, enhancing overall safety. In essence, Safety II compliments Safety I by seeking to recognize and learn from excellent performance and use those lessons to ensure repeatability.
The third session in this five-part senior leader series is virtual and presented by Press Ganey’s Alan Bennett and Steve Kreiser.
