UConn Health and UnitedHealthcare reach new multi-year agreement

UConn Health and UnitedHealthcare reached a new multi-year agreement, UConn Health said late Wednesday.

“This agreement demonstrates what is possible when insurers and providers work together to protect patient access while fairly compensating the institutions that deliver care,” Dr. Andy Agwunobi, CEO of UConn Health, said in a statement. “We appreciate UnitedHealthcare’s collaborative approach and their recognition of the responsibility we share to Connecticut patients.”

As a result of the agreement, UnitedHealthcare members can continue to see UConn Health providers and seek care at UConn Health’s John Dempsey Hospital, according to the health system.

An email seeking comment was sent to UnitedHealthcare.

UConn Health contends is has “historically been reimbursed by some insurers at rates among the lowest in Connecticut. These rates do not reflect the true cost of care for a highly decorated academic medical center and place increasing strain on our ability to serve patients, invest in innovation, and fulfill our public mission.”

UConn did not share plan details in the statement.

“As negotiations continue with Aetna, we urge them to follow UnitedHealthcare’s lead and come to a fair agreement that appropriately compensates UConn Health for the care we provide on behalf of Connecticut’s taxpayers,” Agwunobi said. “When reimbursement fails to reflect the true cost and quality of care, the burden ultimately falls on patients and the public. Connecticut residents deserve insurers that work collaboratively to ensure access to high-quality, reliable care not prolonged uncertainty.”
