Trinity Health Of New England (THONE) has named Dr. Robert Roose to lead three of the healthcare system’s acute care hospitals, as THONE moves toward a goal of “true regionalization.”

Roose will become president of St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury, Mercy Medical Center in Springfield, Mass., and Johnson Memorial Hospital in Stafford Springs, according to an email Montez Carter, president and CEO of THONE, sent to board members Tuesday.

The email states that Roose “will lead strategic execution and operational direction” at the hospitals “further aligning leadership and integrating clinical care and resources.”

The appointment follows news, reported first by the Hartford Business Journal in January, that the president of St. Mary’s Hospital, Kim Kalajainenin, was leaving.

THONE’s two Hartford-based hospitals, St. Francis and Mount Sinai, will continue to be led by Valerie Powell-Stafford.

Roose, currently president of Mercy Medical Center and Johnson Memorial Hospital, will take on the additional responsibility of running St. Mary’s. He has worked for THONE since 2013, previously serving as chief medical officer and vice president of behavioral health at Mercy Medical Center.

Carter said that elevating Roose shows THONE’s commitment to “recognizing the exceptional talent within our team.”

In the email, Carter noted that Roose has overseen several projects, including development of the Andy Yee Palliative Care Unit at Mercy Medical Center, opening of the Geriatric Wellness Pavilion at Johnson Memorial Hospital, and the completion of the $50 million S. Prestley & Helen Blake Ambulatory Care Center in Enfield.

A spokesperson for THONE did not immediately provide a comment Wednesday morning.
