New medical center: Bristol Health combines for efficiency

BRISTOL — Bristol Health joined city leaders and the Central Connecticut Chambers of Commerce in cutting the ribbon for the new Collins Road Medical Center.

The 1,436 square foot building at 25 Collins Road was formerly a Prohealth Physicians location. It has allowed Bristol Health to expand accessibility to care and unite its primary care, specialty services and support programs under one roof. Bristol Health first began seeing patients there on Sept. 8.

The ribbon cutting was attended by city council members, members of the city’s economic and community development department, healthcare providers and board members with Bristol Health.

In September, Primary Care, Infectious Disease Medicine and Travel Medicine services started being offered at the new location by Dr. Richard Zweig and Dr. Bala Shanmugam. Since then, the building has brought in geriatric medicine physicians Margarita Reyes and Shatya Chittoori, Nelson Bondhus, a primary care doctor and Ursula Chock-Harris, who provides behavioral health services.

Kurt Barwis, president and CEO of Bristol Health, said he had been looking for a place to relocate primary care services since first coming to Bristol Health 19 years ago. The location at 25 Collins Road, he said, is a “great location” with “a good, level parking lot.”

“It allows us to combine our programs to deliver care more efficiently and more effectively for our patients,” he said.

Barwis added when Beacon Prescriptions moves out of an adjacent building, Bristol Health will expand into it and offer physical therapy there. The Bristol Radiology Center on the other side of the new building is also a joint venture with Bristol Health. He said it makes sense to have Collins Road as a “destination” for a variety of services. He thanked members of the community for their support of Bristol Health, adding “we couldn’t do it without you.”

Katie D’Agostino, president and CEO of the Central Connecticut Chambers of Commerce, said the Chamber loves to see Bristol Health grow and expand.

“It’s great to see any building being re-used,” she added.

Justin Malley, executive director of Economic and Community Development for the City of Bristol, said Bristol Health has been a “great partner” for the city.

“There are very few organizations in town that have a closer relationship with residents than our local hospital,” he said. “Any time we can celebrate their expansion or making access to care more convenient for patients it is a good day.”
