340B Drug Discount Program Remains Vital To Support Healthcare Services

In an op-ed published this week by CT Mirror, the Connecticut Hospital Association (CHA) outlines the importance of preserving the federal 340B Drug Pricing Program.

Paul Kidwell, senior vice president of policy, CHA, writes, “Federal programs like 340B are vital because they enable hospitals and other healthcare providers like community health centers to support vulnerable populations by maximizing limited federal resources to provide critical services.”

Kidwell underscores that the savings procured from 340B discounts are reinvested into free and reduced-cost care, such as screenings for breast, skin, lung, and prostate cancers, transportation for patients to and from medical appointments, and vans that go into the community to provide pediatric dental services.  In fiscal year 2023, the program helped Connecticut hospitals and health systems contribute $3.5 billion in community benefits.

“It is critical that such programs helping hospitals provide care and community support are sustained and are not undercut to the detriment of patients,” Kidwell writes.
