SHARON – It was a jocular event, but with serious overtones.
Sharon Hospital sponsored a Community Health Day on Saturday, which was filled with fun activities for those of all ages. But the main purpose was to make the public aware of the services offered at the facility to help ensure good health.
Hospital President Christina McCulloch, looking around at the many booths set up, said, “We want to engage the community and have them meet the teams, see the services and also have fun.”
She got into the spirit of the day taking part in the diaper changing competition with Jen Maranzano, the hospital’s outcome data coordinator. The object was to see who could undress a doll, change its diaper and redress it in the fastest time. McCulloch bested Maranzano with a time of 1 minute: 4 seconds.
Nearby, operating room nurse Sean Savoye was demonstrating the use of a bronchoscope, using a pumpkin as the patient. He slowly instructed fifth-grader Abby Braislin how to maneuver the piece of equipment to display the pumpkin’s contents up on a screen.
Interspersed among the fun activities, which included pumpkin painting, a scavenger hunt and bean bag throw, were blood pressure screenings, breast cancer awareness material, a food and nutrition table with healthy snacks and car seat checks.
The Sharon Fire Department and Ambulance and Nuvance Ambulance brought its vehicles for a touch-a-truck event. Fire company members served a barbecue.
