Cassandra Mitchell is the director of Strategic Initiatives at Bridgeport Hospital and is a healthcare hero for the work she does to keep staff and patients safe every day. One of Mitchell’s primary focuses is the HEART team, which stands for Healthcare Employees Advocating for Respectful Treatment. The team assists with challenging patient discharges, helping the inpatient teams navigate patients who are ready to leave the hospital. Her team takes work off the shoulders of the clinical team, allowing them to continue to see other patients instead of spending what could be hours on one patient. Mitchell is an advocate for the hospitalists and nurses she works with, always looking out for their well-being and finding solutions to challenging situations that boost employee morale while providing a respectful and safe environment for patients. When asked what the best ways are to describe her, Mitchell’s colleagues said she is strategic, energetic, and selfless. She is consistently looking for ways to recognize hospital staff and add a little brightness to patients’ days. On major holidays, you can often find Mitchell dressed as a costumed character and visiting patient floors. Last Halloween, she put on a Snow White costume to visit the pediatric unit and cheer up the children. This past December, she created the “Kringle Kart,” which she pushed all around the hospital, giving out small treats to staff for the holidays. She is always looking for ways to make a difference at Bridgeport Hospital, and that is why she is our healthcare hero.
